Hey All!

As fall comes, October brings Hispanic Heritage Month. It’s a time that I usually use to celebrate and embrace my heritage, culture and family traditions. As most of your probably know, I am Puerto Rican and Cuban. I am very proud to be Hispanic and I embrace my culture in many ways.

One of the many ways we keep our traditions is through food! One of my favorite recipes to cook that my abuelita taught me was how to make empanadas.

I am Puerto Rican and Cuban, but I was primarily raised by mom and grandma who are my Puerto Rican side.

My grandmother was 100% Puerto Rican!  She was very traditional and was an amazing caregiver. She raised 5 kids of her own and also had her own Nanny business in which she took care of almost all the kids in the neighborhood. Even with kids who weren’t her own, she was very adamant about instilling the pride of embracing your culture and family traditions.

I say I have more Puerto Rican traditions than I do Cuban, but I’ve tried to embrace my Cuban heritage with my family today. I tend to celebrate our heritage all year long by doing research on our ancestry and by discovering new recipes and traditions with in our cultures. I make sure to do a celebration of all the foods and traditions we’ve learned through out the year during Hispanic Heritage Month in celebration.

It was great to see that the Ford Motor Company is providing corporate funding for a three-part, six-hour series called LATINO AMERICANS. Ford has been one of the longest standing partners of the Hispanic community, and is one of the most respected brands of Latinos of all walks of life because of their multi-faceted and on-going commitment. I truly respect Ford for being such a supporter of Latino culture.

LATINO AMERICANS will feature interviews with Puerto Rican star of West Side Story, Rita Moreno; Mexican-American author and commentator Linda Chavez, who also became the highest ranking woman in the Reagan White House; and Cuban singer and entrepreneur Gloria Estefan.

Rita Moreno and Gloria Estefan are two of my idols! I grew up wanting to be these women. They are both living legends so I can’t wait to tune in to see this amazing series. If you want to learn more about Latinos in American I highly recommend you tune in.

LATINO AMERICANS will air on PBS on September 17th, September 24th, and October 1st from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. (EST).

LATINO AMERICANS will premiere in Spanish on Vme TV with a new chapter every Friday at 10 pm EST, beginning September 20 through October 25. For local listings, please visit www.vmetv.com.
