Hey All!

Last month I had the fantastic opportunity to take my family to see an advanced preview screening of Disney’s The Descendants. I also got to fulfill the lifelong dream I’ve had of meeting Kenny Ortega. Kenny Directed this fantastic new Disney Channel Original Movie based on a series of books by the same name, including the novel Isle of the Lost by Melissa De la Cruz. If you don’t know Kenny Ortega, he’s the insanely talented man who helped bring many cinematic joys to our lives as a Director and Choreographer. He directed all the “High School Musical” movies and brought Zac Efron to the mainstream. He also directed “Hocus Pocus” and Newsies. He choreographed such classics as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Dirty Dancing”! I can go on and on about my love for Kenny, so you could imagine that I couldn’t wait to see Disney’s The Descendants. I knew it would be amazing if he was involved.

Disney’s The Descendants takes place in a world where the Disney heroes have triumphed years prior and all of the villains have been banished to an inescapable island where magic is blocked. The story follows the children of some of the most notorious Disney villains: Cruella De Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson from television’s The Game), Jafar (comedian Maz Jobrani), The Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy from the Sister Act films) and Maleficent (Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristen Chenoweth). Their children have been raised on this island and because the parents are evil the children only know how to be evil.

Mal (Dove Cameron from Liv and Maddie) is daughter of Maleficent and is leader of the pack of bad kids. Booboo Stewart (X-men: Days of Future Past) is Jay, the son of Jafar.

Sofia Carson (Faking It) is Evie the daughter of The Evil Queen. And finally Cameron Boyce is Carlos (Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2), the son of Cruella De Vil. Across the way in the kingdom of Auradon, the son of Beauty and the Beast is about to be crowned king and, as his first royal decree, states that 4 children from the island will come to live and be schooled at the same prep school as the children of the Disney heroes. Prince Ben believes that because they are children they deserve a second chance at life for the opportunity to be good citizens.

The evil parents accept this offer for their children with the hidden agenda to have the children steal a magic wand and free the parents.

The real fun of this film is the effects being a child of a villain has had on the main characters. Because The Evil Queen was viciously vain, her daughter is obsessed with her own appearance and is consistently fixing her makeup, despite being very intelligent. Jay, is the antithesis of his father the manipulative wizard Jafar. He is very athletic and physical. Carlos is raised by Cruella De Vil that all dogs are monsters and vicious killers and thus has a powerful fear of canines. And being the daughter of Maleficent, Mal is adept with and hungry to perform magic spells.

The Descendants is a musical with both singing and dancing to original music. Like High School Musical, the film deals with real problems teens and pre-teens typically face. In this case the issues are acceptance by both peers and family alike and finding your own path in life.
