Hey All!

Summer doesn’t officially end until September 23rd, 2015. I’m keeping this Summer party train going until at least the end of next week, as I can’t bring myself to say goodbye to Summer. I’m still far too obsessed with Watermelons, Ice Cream, and Flamingos. We’re going to send Summer off right with a bunch of fun Summer themed posts I’ll be sharing until next Friday. I started off with our fun Watermelon Themed Picnic and today I’m happy to share this funĀ DIY Watermelon Birthday Cake along with some fun candle ideas.

I was doing my usual nightly pinning when I came across this amazing tutorial from Love, Life, and Sugar on how to make the perfect smooth cake. I really wanted to try it, so I figured I would make myself and my niece a little watermelon cake. Her birthday just passed. There is no reason to not keep celebrating.

To Make this cake you need:

  • Red Icing or Frosting
  • Black Icing
  • White Frosting with Green Food Coloring or if you can find already Green Frosting
  • Piping Tips
  • Couplers to hold the tips
  • Spatula
  • Turning Cake Stand
  • Cake Comb and Smoother
  • Some fun candles
  • SilverĀ Scalloped Edge Cake Board
  • 9 inch cake pan
  • Chocolate and Yellow Cake Mixes

You can get most of this stuff on Amazon or your local grocery store. I was so engrossed on trying to get this cake perfect, I forgot to take step by step pictures. Sorry folks! That’s my bad!

To start,Ā I simply mixed my yellow and chocolate cake mixes to give them a little two cake blended swirl. I baked them according tot he boxed directions in a 9 inch well greased cake pan. I only made one cake as I wanted to make it a single layer small cake. I popped the cake out of the pan and put it on aĀ SilverĀ Scalloped Edge Cake Board.

Once the cake was done, I let it cool completely. I even put it in the freezer to harden up.

I followed this tutorial to first get the red icing smooth on the top of the cake. I placed it back in the freezer once I got the red perfectly smooth.

I then proceeded to ice the sides of the cake with my green frosting which I made with green food coloring. I spread it on the outside of the cake with my spatula. I made sure to use my cake smoother to make sure it was smooth all along the sides. I then used my cake comb to make the line design on the outside. I basically scraped the comb along the cake as I turned my turning cake stand. This is a must have to make this cake.

Once that was done I took my piping tips and piped the green frosting on top of the red icing to give it that water melon shape. I think piped on some black icing tear drops to make the Watermelon seeds.

That’s it! That’s all you have to do to make this fun and adorable Watermelon cake. It’s super simple to make and it would be the perfect birthday cake for any Watermelon or summer themed party.

You can decorated with these fun and colorful lollipop candles I found in the baking aisle at my local grocery store. They’re literally Betty Crocker candles. They’ve really stepped up the birthday candle section in the baking section.

You could also get these fun swirling taper candles and thisĀ NPW Birthday Candles that say Hashtag #You’re OldĀ if you’re making it for on of your adult gal pals birthday. No one needs number candles any more once you get to a certain age. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about. We all have our scary age and there is no need to display it on a cake!Ā I couldn’t fit the “You’re” on there since the cake is so small, but I figured hashtag OLD got the point across and looked cute enough.

I think it’s such a cute and funny way to decorate a cake for someone’s birthday!

You slice that cake open and you’ll have some delicious chocolate swirled yellow cake inside. I’m more of a yellow/vanilla cake kind of gal, so I didn’t include too much chocolate cake.

When you slice and serve the cake, they look like adorable little Watermelon slices.
