Hey All!

Being a Latina, some of my favorite family recipes originated in my grandmother and great grandmother’s kitchens. The stories behind the recipes are cherished moments that I will pass on to my children. Some of my most beloved Latino family traditions involve recipes/food. It’s just instilled with in our culture at a young age. In my family food is part of our traditions. It’s the one thing that would always bring us together. I’ve shared this before, but it’s such an important aspect of my life and how I grew up that I can always continue to talk about.

The passing down of recipes is a little piece of our family heritage. We weren’t the richest of people growing up, so for us recipes and our love of cooking was all we had that was passed down to us. During these cooking sessions spent with my Abuelita and mom I not only learned how to cook our favorite recipes, I learned our family history. My grandmother would always share her tales of how she would cook in Puerto Rico with her mother. Cooking with my Grandmother literally became a family tradition and 3 generations learned to cook from my Granny!

While keeping the traditions of making Empanadas (which we call pastelillos) and arros con gandules alive I’ve learned I’ve actually been cooking with Soy Bean Oil.

Empanada_Recipe2 copy

Though you may not realize it, there’s a good chance soybean oil is part of your cooking routine. In fact, soybean oil accounts for approximately 58% of vegetable oil used in homes and commercial cooking! Just check the ingredients label to be sure.

Soybean oil is one of the most versatile ingredients in my pantry. The oil has a neutral flavor that helps me create some of my favorite traditional meals without compromising taste.  It also offers better-for-you health benefits and is about a tenth of the cost of some competing oils.

When cooking or frying I’ve been using soybean oil and my family can’t tell the difference, which is great. It allows me to continue to make the recipes that have been passed down to me and keep the traditions alive.

The United Soybean Board (USB) is also inviting you to make a short video of your family making their favorite traditional recipes and upload your videos to the Soy Connection’s Digital Time Capsule Website. USB launched a virtual library where families can share the rich history behind beloved dishes. Participants will have the opportunity to have their special customs videos honored in the Soy Connection Digital Time Capsule. Entries will be accepted until September 30, 2014 at www.SoyConnection.com/hispanictraditions.php. Once on the site, you will be able to read a bit more on the campaign and will learn that some of their most cherished family recipes are actually made with soybean oil.

Growing up in LA empanadas were favorite. I’m actually going to do some more research on soy bean oil. I would like to know more so I can possible incorporate it into my cooking. I have moved from LA to Texas (which I could get some decent empanadas) and now I live in Georgia where it might be a little bit of a challenge to find them. The good thing is I can always make them!!! I love learning about new things this is great.
