Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters takes place sometime after The Lightning Thief. Percy is now living permanently at Camp Halfbood and even though in his first adventure he saved Olympus, his fellow demigods do not see him any differently. Clarisse, an arrogant daughter of Ares, is especially harsh on Percy. Even though she seems to win every event in which she competes, she is compelled to rub it in Percy’s face as she believes his success was a fluke. Unfortunately Percy believes the same. Wherein his first adventure was a discovery of who he is, this adventure focuses on what he can do and instead of saving his mother, Percy must save his home Camp Halfblood. Luke, the villain from The Lightning Thief, has returned. Luke still wants to punish the gods. Aiding Percy in this new quest to stop Luke is of course Grover and Annabeth as well as the newbie to Camp Halfblood, Tyson. Tyson is a Cyclops that has a surprise connection to Percy that will forever change not only his life, but also his place in the big scheme of things.

While there are plenty of adventures and fantasy based films in the world, the Percy Jackson films have a unique niche; they are formulated in the exact way that ancient Greek myth stories were done. The ancient myths are just modernized here with our new heroes. It is clever in that it retells amazing stories to today’s children and not only sparks their interest to read the Percy Jackson novels, but maybe even read some of the stories from ancient Greece that have lasted for centuries.

While the film stands on its own, I think it does help a lot to see the first Percy Jackson adventure. This is a great continuation of the Percy Jackson Films, which will hopefully carry on to the next big screen adventure. Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is a great family friendly fun film. Of any of the films out there, this is the only one that is both action-packed and appropriate for all ages.

Run out and see this great film on August 7th!
