Hey All!

We love to celebrate the Fourth of July like every other American family. Who doesn’t love to watch the fireworks light up the night sky?! I know I do! Being a Hispanic in America, we blend our family traditions with the U.S. traditions to celebrate Fourth of July. It’s a day to celebrate our freedom and my family truly knows the meaning of what it is to value freedom. I’m Puerto Rican and Cuban, as I’m sure most of you know by now. My mother’s side is Puerto Rican and my grandparents came to the states back in the 50’s. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the USA, so people from Puerto Rican are born US Citizens and can travel any where in the USA with out a passport. They chose to live in NYC where they had my mom and 4 other kids. They worked very hard to provide for their family and truly lived all their lives working hard to achieve the American dream. My father (who is my Cuban side of the family) has a different story of coming to America. His family had to flee Cuba when he was little because of the political situation taking over the country. He came to America when he was 3 years old with his parents and brother. They too chose to live in NYC and they later had my aunt in NYC and they all became US citizens.

My family combined has had both experiences with having and wanting freedom, so we take the Fourth of July to celebrate the joys of having the freedom we are so blessed to have. We combine our traditions mainly by the food we eat on this special celebration. We BBQ like every other American, but we have some Hispanic dishes incorporated. For example we eat pastellios aka beef empanadas and star shaped donuts. We also make mojitos to drink and eat tostones (fried plantains) and some traditional American BBQ treats like hotdogs and Honey Maid s’mores!
