Chatting With The Directors and Masi Oka of SPIES IN DISGUISE!

Hey All!

I recently got the amazing opportunity to chat with Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane and the amazingly talented actor Masi Oka (voice of “Kimura”) about their new film Spies in Disguise. The film stars Will Smith and Tom Holland aka Spider-Man! They voice the two main characters in the film. We sadly didn’t get to chat with them, but it was so amazing to get the opportunity to hear how this movie came to be. If you haven’t heard of the film, here is a brief summery if this fun animated movie.

Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is…not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise – transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic…pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril.

First off, Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane shared that they wrote the role of Lance Sterling with Will Smith in mind. They actually had the design of the character already done and it came out looking like Will Smith before he even signed on.

This is the first spy movie for kids! The directors have always been huge fans of spy movies and wanted to adapt a short film called Pigeon: Impossible. They thought it would make the perfect spy movie for kids.

They also shared that they studied all there is to know about pigeons and every time they see pigeons now, they think spy! They also shared that they wanted to make a point to not glorify violence in the film, so the film is very family friendly.

Lastly, the Directors shared they wanted to make sure that kids felt it was ok to be themselves. “You can see the character of Lance and want to be him, but know it’s ok to be a Walter.”

Masi Oka shared how he got into the film. He was actually going to audition to voice a different character for a different film, but the casting director of this film asked him if he’d like to read for Spies in Disguise. The rest is history!

He loves that his character has this tough exterior but is really a softy on the inside.

He never got the chance to meet anyone in the film while he was recording. He was happy to finally get to meet his co-stars at the premiere.

It was so fun to get to chat with them for a few minutes about this amazing new animated film!

Spies in Disguise is in Theatres now! Check it out!
