Check out our thoughts on Deadpool and Wolverine!
Hey All!
Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine is appropriately named in that it is less Deadpool 3 and more a joint film following the journey of both the Deadpool and Wolverine characters. Deadpool and Wolverine is firmly planted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Marvel studios logo and theme precede the film, but holds the sense of humor for which both Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool films are notorious.
With a title like Deadpool and Wolverine, you better believe that the stars of this movie are Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, both reprising their respective roles which they have building over years. Up front I will say that this film is filled with cameos and actors playing “surprise” roles and their reveals are definitely part of the experience and anyone who is a fan of ALL Marvel films from the last 26 years (yes references go all the way back to a certain Marvel film from the late 90s) would be robbed of the audience experience with any spoilers.
In addition to those appearances, the two antagonists of the film are Cassanda Nova played by Emma Corrin (The Crown, A Murder at the End of the World) and Mister Paradox played by Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).
The irreverent and sometimes crass humor and excessive cartoonish violence and blood that the Deadpool films are known for is kicked up to a level that I cannot imagine being topped ever again. It is all done in very fun and cartoonish ways so its all done in the name of humor and not to disturb someone.
This is just a warning to anyone who sees the Marvel Logo and thinks it’s going to be appropriate for younger or more sensitive audiences. This is not a movie for young kids! Teens and up will love it!
The story is very simple and has been completely revealed in the trailers. Deadpool’s “universe” is facing annihilation from the Time Variance Authority (introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Loki Disney Plus series but fully explained within this film) and Deadpool’s only way of saving it is by replacing the “hero” of its universe after its “anchor,” Wolverine/Logan, is killed. After a montage through various variants of Wolverine (some of these variants are going to blow minds), Deadpool finds the Wolverine who will be the joint star of the rest of the adventure.
Without revealing too much of the actual plot, the rest of the film is a very self-aware and fun series of cartoonish carnage, well-choreographed violent fights, irreverent jokes, and self-aware jokes poking fun at Marvel, Hugh Jackman, superhero films in general, and Disney.
Deadpool and Wolverine knows its audience and gives them everything they want and probably more! It’s awesome and it delivers for the fans. That being said, go see Deadpool and Wolverine ready to laugh and hear some of the most foul-mouthed vulgarities ever spoken in Marvel film from characters/actors you may not expect to hear such words.
It’s a wild ride that’s incredibly entertaining and has a lot of heart! You’re going to have to see it because come Monday the internet is going to explode with memes about this movie and the dialogue and jokes which it spawns is part of the fun of going to the movies.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” opens in theaters on July 26, 2024. Get your tickets now! LFG!
