Hey All!
I was invited to the Disney Animation Studio (from where the real magic comes), for a press to day for Disney’s “Frozen” (coming to theaters this November 27) and its accompanying short “Get a Horse.”
I would first like to tell you about the beautiful and innovative new short “Get a Horse.” This short is both a throwback to the Mickey Mouse shorts from the 20’s and 30’s and an ingenious mesh of 2D traditional and computer graphics 3D animation.
Director Lauren MacMullan and Producer Dorothy McKim were on hand to inform us about the process it took to bring this short to life. The goal was to make the short not only seem like it belonged in the era, but that it was found footage. To age the short the animators simulated digital film damage and even added little mistakes. As an added treat, audio of Walt Disney voicing Mickey Mouse was dug out of the vaults and added to the short. Walt Disney himself performs as Mickey Mouse for the first time in 58 years in this brand new short.
The unique hand-drawn/CG collaboration, that was pioneered in the Disney 2012 Oscar winning short “Paperman,” was taken to the next level in “Get a Horse!” Because the short involves two types of animation, both departments collaborated sharing both their technical expertise and their story ideas. About four times a day the 2D and CG animators would trade shots. Because Mickey exists traditionally in 2D animation, creating a CG version of Mickey required a lot of tweaking to make perfect.
“Get a Horse!” is not only the title of this groundbreaking technical short, but also an important message to those that believe things of the past need to make way for the future.
This short is not to be missed with Frozen!
