Hey All!
Iām back to share two fun Mo Willems books thanks to Disney-Hyperion! We recently received the books Sam, The Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World and Leonardo, the Terrible Monster. Sam, The Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World was just released this year and itās the perfect follow up to Leonardo, the Terrible Monster.
As we approach Thanksgiving, Iām so thankful to have family, friends, and these amazing books that we can enjoy together. In case youāve never heard of these books, here is a little synopsis of each:
About Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World
Sam is afraid of anything and everythingāexcept for his friend Leonardo, the terrible monster. Kerry is afraid of everything and anythingāexcept for her friend Frankenthaler, the other monster. One day, the two scaredy-cat kids make a particularly scary discovery: each other! AAH! EEK!Something has to be done. Something BIG. But what?
AboutĀ Leonardo, the Terrible Monster
Leonardo is truly a terrible monster-terrible at being a monster that is. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to frighten anyone. Determined to succeed, Leonardo sets himself to training and research. Finally, he finds a nervous little boy, and scares the tuna salad out of him! But scaring people isn’t quite as satisfying as he thought it would be. Leonardo realizes that he might be a terrible, awful monster-but he could be a really good friend.
The books are beautifully illustrated and showcase how valuable friendships are. I am happy to admit, as a child I never had problems making friends, but it was instilled in me to always appreciate and value your friends. Itās so important to teach kids that at a young age. This book can definitely help spark that conversation with you and your children. In my opinion, nothing is more valuable than a good friend thatās always there for you no matter what.
To help make reading this book and sparking the conversation with your kids a little more fun, I decided to make these fun and easy to make DIY Monster Finger Puppets. Iāve made some of Leonardo and Frankenthaler the monsters from Sam, The Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World.
These finger puppets will also help make monsters seem less scary to your kids and showcase that you can have fun with monsters and that even monsters need friends. They are also fun to make with your kids, as itās a kid safe craft since the glue is non-toxic!
Here is how to make them.
- Scissors
- Non-Toxic Felt Glue
- Various Colored Pieces of Felt. (Youāll need a Light Purple, Yellowish Lime Green Felt, Light Blue, Light Pink, Light and Dark Brown felt in particular to make Leonardo and Frankenthaler)
- Black Marker
First you cut out a rectangular piece of felt thatās wide enough to wrap around you or your childās finger! Roll up the piece of felt around your finger and you glue the back flap of the piece down to the body of the felt. Hold the pieces together until the glue is secured to the felt and it doesnāt unroll itself.
To make Leonardo, once your glue secure, you then cut the top of the piece to make the top round.
For Frankenthaler, you leave the top of his finger puppet straight. You then cut out two light blue and light purple little horn/ear pieces, four blue eyes, one pink nose, one light brown nose, two brown mouth pieces, one blue tongue and teeth, and one pink teeth piece. These are all the pieces you need for the faces of Leonardo and Frankenthaler. Each set of pieces goes with each puppet like you see below.
You then glue each set of pieces to the front of your finger puppet.
Lastly, you use your black marker to draw on the eye dots, nose dots, and tongue line for Leonardo.
Thatās it! Youāre done!
Youāve made some fun finger puppets for you and your child to play with together. You can make as many monsters as youād like and you can make them look however youād like.
You can invite your kids friends over and they can have a little finger puppet making party and sit down and play and read the books.
I hope you and your kids will love these finger puppets and these books just as much and me and my family do!
They are the perfect addition to story time!
You can find these books at your local bookstore or online. You need to run out and get them now, because your kids will love them. They would make great gifts for the holidays!
