DIY Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk!

Hey All!

Happy first official day of summer! It’s the official start to fun in the sun and nothing beats getting outside with the family for some good old fashioned fun in the sun! I used to love to play outside on the sidewalk in NYC with my sidewalk chalk. I decided to be a little nostalgic and make my own DIY Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk! Yep it’s a layered rainbow chalk, because hello…I’m obsessed with rainbows! Your kids will love it! If you’re a teacher and want to bring some rainbow fun to your classroom, you can make these too! Heck if you want to relive your childhood and go draw some sidewalk art with your chalk, feel free to make it for yourself!

Here is how to make it!

  • 1 Container Plaster of Paris
  • Washable Tempera Paint In Rainbow Colors
  • Plastic Spoons
  • Plastic Cups
  • Silicone Mold of your choice. I used THIS ONE, but you can use any silicone shaped mold.

First you mix! Pour 1/3 cup water at a temperature of 40-50 degrees into each plastic cup. Stir about 3-4 Tbsp. of a different color paint into each cup of water.

You then mix 2/3 cup Plaster of Paris into each cup. The consistency will be similar to runny yogurt. Pour these into the silicone mold and tap it gently on the counter to remove air bubbles. To make them rainbow, pour in a layer of each color into each mold. This will make them have layers of rainbow colors.

Let set up for 24 hours. Setting them in the sun will lesson the time.

Pop the chalk out of the molds and make sure they feel dry all over. If they don’t let them sit in the sun by a window for another hour and you should be ok!

Once they are dry, you’re ready to start coloring your rainbows on the sidewalk.

How cute are these folks? Love them! It’s a super simple and easy DIY that you can make for some fun in the sun with your kids.

I hope you enjoy these DIY Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk as much as I do!

Happy start of Summer folks! Remember to wear that sunscreen when you’re out having some fun in the sun!
