Looking for a cute little DIY decoration for Cinco De Mayo? Check out this Dollar Store Flowerpot Sombrero Craft For Cinco De Mayo!
Hey All!
Happy Cinco De Mayo! Let’s spend the day doing a fun little craft and munching on our favorite treats. Gather up the basic household supplies needed to create Flowerpot Sombrero Craft and get crafting with the kiddos for Cinco de Mayo or Taco Tuesday!
It’s so cute and easy to make!
Here is how to make them:
Flowerpots (terra cotta) and Saucers – I used 3″ pots and 4.5″ saucers. You can make them any size you want but be sure the saucer is larger than the pot, so it looks like a sombrero.
Acrylic Craft Paint – Soft Yellow, Bright Green, Orchid, Bright Blue
Paintbrush – one-half-inch flat wash
Rick Rack – assorted colors
Mini Pom Pom Ball Fringe – assorted colors
Pom Poms – assorted colors
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Scissors
Basecoat the clay pots and saucers with soft yellow acrylic craft paint, leaving the top band on the pot plain. Apply a second coat, if necessary. Set aside to dry.
Paint the sombrero hatbands in bright colors with the paintbrush. I used orchid, bright green, and bright blue acrylic craft paints. Apply a second coat, if necessary. Set aside to dry.
Stack the pot upside down in the center of the saucer to create Flowerpot Sombreros. Adhere with a glue gun, if desired, or leave the pot separate from the saucer for easy storage.
Once dry, attach a contrasting color of rick rack to the sombrero hatband using a glue gun a glue sticks. Trim to size with scissors and secure the ends.
Adhere mini pom pom ball fringe in a coordinating color to the outside edge of the sauce with a glue gun and glue sticks. Trim to size with scissors and secure the ends with additional glue.
To finish the Flowerpot Sombreros, glue a pom pom in a coordinating bright color to cover the drain hole in the bottom of the clay pot.
Use these sombreros as colorful decorations for your Cinco de Mayo celebration. Add a flag with a skewer, paper, and marker to create place cards. Hide some candy inside the clay pot and create a sweet party favor.
Make a bunch of Flowerpot Sombreros in different sizes to create a one-of-a-kind centerpiece! If you don’t have clay pots and saucers available then paper cups and plates are the perfect substitutes and toddler friendly, too.
I hope you enjoy these Flowerpot Sombreros as much as I do!
