Hey All!
Dove believes beauty should be a source of confidence, not anxiety. I know it’s a subject that girls have to deal with at a younger and younger age as time goes on. To combat this, Dove is encouraging women to start the conversation about self-esteem with the young girls in their life. A simple act, such as starting a conversation about beauty, can make a world of difference. Teaching girls the true meaning of beauty can make a world of difference in a young girls life. Dove is committed to inspiring all women and girls to reach their full potential. The Dove Movement for Self-Esteem opens up a world of opportunities for women to make a difference.
How do you talk to a young girl about beauty and self-esteem?
I know when I was a young girl my mother used to sit me down and talk to me all the time about beauty and self-esteem. She would always tell me about the value of believing in myself and knowing that it means nothing to be beautiful on the outside if you’re ugly on the inside. She always told me that it was better to be a beautiful person in every way, rather than just be vain and pretty on the outside. I’ve always lived my life this way. I try to lead by that example with my niece when she’s with us during the week. She’s at the age that is very impressionable, so I want to make sure she is comfortable in her own skin at a very young age.
I try to give her the tools and pride in herself to combat anyone who might try to bring down her spirit and esteem. There is so much negativity in this world, it’s up to us as women to stand up and show our girls to be proud of who they are and to be proud of themselves in every way. My mother did this for me and I know that when I have a daughter of my own hopefully one day I will do this for her as well. I even do this for my son as boys need a little help in self esteem too!
Everyone has the opportunity to make a difference in a girl’s self-esteem! More than half of girls globally say their mother is their number one female role model (66 percent U.S., 59 percent Canada)! A simple act, such as starting a conversation about beauty, can make a world of difference!
Dove invites women across the U.S. to participate in the Dove Self-Esteem Weekend, taking place October 5-7 nationwide!
