Easy DIY Galaxy Surprise Cupcakes For Space Exploration Day!

Hey All!

Did you know Space Exploration Day is coming up on July 20? Learning about space was always one of my favorite things to do as a kid and I’m thrilled to be able to pass on that love to my own family. To celebrate, the family and I decided to create an edible solar system map! It’s a perfect, tasty DIY to do with your kids to teach them the names of each planet in the solar system. I wish my mom would have thought up this idea when I was a kid. It’s so much more fun to learn the solar system with cupcakes, as opposed to those Styrofoam ball planets. Thanks to a fun collaboration with Pillsbury™, we’re learning about outer space in the most delicious way possible with Pillsbury baking mixes and frostings. I’m also showing you how to make these easy DIY Galaxy Surprise Cupcakes For Space Exploration Day! Pillsbury was kind enough to send us an amazing outer space learning poster, some awesome new Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag frostings, and a box of Pillsbury Funfetti® cake mix to make them with.

I can’t tell you how much I love these Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bags! They are the first-ever pre-filled pastry bag and it makes frosting so much easier and more fun for bakers of all skill levels and ages. They are a match made in heaven for kids! They’re a god send for moms, as there is so much less to clean up after decorating cupcakes as well. Making our galaxy cupcakes was a cinch thanks to these!

Here is how to make them:

  • 1 Bag of New Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag Frostings
  • 1 Box of Funfetti® Premium Cake and Cupcake Mix With Candy Bits
  • Galaxy Themed Sprinkles and Star Sprinkles
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Cupcake Baking Pan
  • White Cardstock
  • Tooth Picks
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Small Circle Cookie Cutter
  • Download and Print This Free Printable Solar System

First you place your cupcake baking pan with your cupcake liners. You then mix up your Pillsbury Funfetti® cake mix and fill your cupcake liners half way with your cake batter.

Bake your cupcakes according to the box directions and let them cool completely once they are done.

Take your small round cookie cutter and cut out the center of the cupcake to make a cavity to fill with your galaxy sprinkles.

Place some galaxy sprinkles, candy rocks, and stars into the hole of the cupcake.

The kids will love filling the cupcakes with sprinkles.

Place the round piece cut out of the center of the cupcake back into the cupcake, over the sprinkles.

Get your Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag and open the bag at the tip of the pastry bag.

Frost your cupcakes with your Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag. You and the kids can take turns frosting each cupcake. Make sure to frost 9 cupcakes total in order to make all the planets.

After your cupcakes are all frosted, dunk each one into your galaxy sprinkles.

Place some of the candy rocks from the sprinkles in different parts of the cupcake. This gives it a more galaxy look.

Sprinkle with some star sprinkles and repeat this which each cupcake.

How fun are these cupcakes just on their own? Your kids will love them!

The final step is to turn them into the solar system and get to having to space exploration fun.

You download and print this Free Printable Solar System onto white cardstock. Cut them out with your kids using kid safe scissors.

We were sent this space learning poster, but you can easily make your own by drawing a sun in the center and circles with the name of each planet onto a large blue poster board.

After all your planets are cut out, you can place a tiny bit of frosting on the back of each planet piece.

Place one planet on each of the nine cupcakes.

I tried to match some of the planets with their cupcake liners. For example Mars is on top of the cupcake with a red cupcake liner and earth is on the cupcake with a green cupcake liner.

You can then have your kids move each planet cupcake to the correct name in the circle. The kids get to eat the cupcakes they get right.

How fun is that? Learning about space is now so much tastier for kids.

If you simply just want to make some galaxy themed cupcakes, you can instead tape the planets onto toothpicks and insert them into cupcakes.

And that’s how you make some amazing DIY Galaxy Surprise Cupcakes for Space Exploration Day!

Either way you make them, when your kids take a bite from the cupcake, the galaxy sprinkles inside will pour out. Surprise cupcakes are always so much fun for kids!
