Gavin Degraw and Colbie Caillat Discuss Their Title Song for #SafeHaven #SafeHavenMovie

Hey All!

I recently had the amazing opportunity to meet platinum recording artist Gavin Degraw and theĀ multi-platinum artist Colbie Caillat to discuss their involvement with the music for the soon to be released Nicholas Sparks book to film Safe Haven. They wrote the beautiful title song for the film called “We Both Know”. We had the amazing opportunity to see them perform live. They sound incredible live and just as good as they sound on their records. As all recording artists should sound.

I’m a huge fan of Gavin Degraw, not just because we’re from NYC, but because he’s an amazingly talented singer and musician. I love him even more now that I have met him and know he is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I’m begging him to play my Muppet Wedding! It will happen! Let me not forget to mention how much I love Colbie Caillat as well. She too was super nice and I’m so happy to have met her as well.

I sat next to both amazing singers and it was one of the most fun interviews I’ve ever experienced. Gavin Degraw and I exchanged High Fives. We sang the theme song from Shaft and even talked about hanging in Washington Heights in NYC! We had a blast I tell you! A blast!

But after we chummed around like best buds, we did get down to business about how they became involved in the film Save Haven. They discussed everything from about how they felt about the film, to the inspiration behind the song, and how their parents have been their biggest influences in their lives.

You can see the music video for this beautiful duet below:

We also discussed how they were you inspired to write the song and if they got to see the movie at all or clips of the movie before theyĀ  started writing?

Colbie Caillat:Ā Ā

No, we didn’t get to see the film, but they had told us what it was about.Ā  And Gavin and I were on tour all summer together, so we already had a friendship, and we already sang together every night, And so, we were writing.Ā  We had a break from tour, and we were at my house in LA, and Gavin had this idea for the chorus, and I thought it was beautiful.Ā  And so, we just continued writing that day and tapping into what we’ve been through in previous relationships and what that meant for the film and for what Alex [Played by Josh Duhamel] and Katie [Played by Julianne Hough]?

What they’re going through, scared of love and things that happened in their past and so, we wrote it for the ending part of the film.Ā  And I think it’s great because people can relate to it, as well, because everyone goes through that when they’re trying to start a new relationship but they have these things that are holding them back.

Gavin Degraw:

As far as this song was concerned, during the writing process of the song, there were a couple of types of songs that were going through my mind, and sort of like a Phil Collins Against All Odds sort of thing. And the big beautiful anthemic taking your time with the melody sort of approach, letting the song speak without interference of anything else, and then in the second verse, we felt that we needed to pick it up a little bit just to add a little bit of tempo, a little bit of rhythm in the melody.

So, within melodies, there are rhythms. So, that’s why we threw in the Islands in the Stream sort of feel, try to be my helping hand, try to be the one who understands, it gives it a little bit of bounce just for a minute.

It was shocking to hear they wrote the song while on tour together as it’s amazing that a song can come out this good when they recorded it on breaks in the tour. They were approached by Relativity Media to write the song together and I have to say they did an amazing job to create the perfect title song to this amazing film. Don’t you agree?

I love this song and film!

Here is a little about the film if you haven’t read my previous post:

Safe Haven is an affirming and suspenseful story about a young womanā€™s struggle to love again, Safe Haven is based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, the best-selling author behind the hit films The Notebook and Dear John. When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.
