Hey All!

Inside Out and Inside Out 2 are two of Pixar’s most successful features in terms of critical acclaim, audience response, and financial success; Inside Out 2 is right now the highest grossing film of 2024. While Pixar has done an animated short within the “Inside Out” universe, Dream Productions is the first series continuing the adventures of Riley’s inner workings.

Dream Productions played a minor role in the first Inside Out film and is where Riley’s dreams are literally created as though they were a movie studio production. In the Disney Plus series, the four episodes use the now popular faux documentary format, like the popular show The Office, in which characters speak to the camera as it follows them through their workday. Paula Persimmon, voiced by Paula Pell (Wine Country, Inside Out) is the main protagonist of Dream Productions.

Paula is one of a handful of studio directors that create dreams. Though her success garnered her much praise and notoriety, she has hit a slump over the years with Riley growing older. The four episodes follow her attempts to try new things to grow as a creator, maintain her sense of relevancy with Riley, and recapture her former glory.

Obstacles that Paula encounters along the way include the head of the studio, voiced by Maya Rudolph (Away We Go, Bridesmaids) who just wants a hit at any cost; the nephew of the studio head voice by Richard Ayoade (The Watch) who wants to change everything up to be more avant garde; and Paula’s assistant director, voiced by Ally Maki (Hacks, Toy Story 4) who is more in touch with Riley and just wants a chance to step out from the shadow of Paula and become a director on her own. Though the obstacles are personified as characters, the biggest hurdle, as with both Inside Out films, is simply Riley growing up with every character doing their best to support and be a part of that process.

Though Dream Production Studios is the main setting of the show, we also get to check in with the emotions from the first Inside Out, here voiced by their Inside Out actors Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Tony Hale as Fear, Liza Lapira as Disgust, and Lewis Black as Anger. And much like both Inside Out films, we see Riley in her physical life as she navgates the complexities of going to a school dance.

The humor and emotional impacts of the lessons learned in Dream Productions are light, inoffensive, fun, and very in line with the Inside Out Films. The message of “it takes a village to raise a child” remains true. Each episode is between 20 to 25 minutes and is fun for the whole family. Binge watched together, they run as fast as most animated films on the shorter end of the runtime but breaking them up into episodes is equally enjoyable for this holiday season.
