I don’t know about you, but I grew up putting a hat full of fruit on my head and dancing around as I sang the Chiquita Banana jingle. Chances are you used to sing it as well or know at least some bars of the song. I always liked to sing and dance as a child, but I always loved Miss Chiquita for some reason. Her colorful fruity attire was amazing to me. I was thrilled to recently find out that Chiquita is reintroducing the legendary Chiquita Jingle in a fun new contest. Chiquita is looking for the next sing-off star in their Chiquita Jingle Contest! Sing it for yourself, for a chance to win $5000!
But first you need a little history lesson on how this amazing jingle came to be before you can sing your heart out to try to win. The song first hit the airwaves in 1944 when Miss Chiquita made her debut. It was written to help teach Americans how to ripen and use bananas, which were, at the time, an exotic tropical fruit. At its peak, the jingle was played 376 times a day on radio stations across the United States. It was one of the most successful commercial jingles of all time. An ad agency team led by Robert Foreman created the song. Foreman and his staff developed the jingle using office talent, an old piano and a box of paper clips shaken to simulate maracas. Garth Montgomery wrote the lyrics and co-worker Len MacKenzie provided the music. The singer in the original 1944 recording was Patti Clayton, the first in a long line of Miss Chiquitas.
And that’s the history of this amazing jingle. Today, it’s still the “top banana” in jingles, and like I said before you can enter their Chiquita Banana Sing-Off until May 27, 2015!

I decided to relive my childhood and enter this fabulous contest myself. Any chance I get to sing the jingle for a chance to win some awesome prizes like a year’s worth of bananas sounds good to me! You just have to register on the site and then pick how you want to submit your video. I didn’t have any banana glasses unfortunately, so I put on my pineapple glasses to get in the mood. I chose to do the sing along which allows you to record and submit your video karaoke style right from the site itself. You can see yourself as you record your video.
When you press record the jingle lyrics appeared on the screen and it records as you sing along to the music. I sang my little heart out and had fun doing it.
These are the lyrics below so you can get to practicing before you make your video to submit.
“I’m Chiquita banana and I’ve come to say – Bananas have to ripen in a certain way – When they are fleck’d with brown and have a golden hue – Bananas taste the best and are best for you – You can put them in a salad – You can put them in a pie-aye – Any way you want to eat them – It’s impossible to beat them – But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator – So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator.”

I’m not embarrassed in any way to be singing that jingle and wearing some pineapple glasses as I sing. No sir! I do that on a daily basis, so why not share it with the world!
