Magical Moments In Watching Your Kids Grow Up! #TimothyGreen

Hey All!

Being a Young parent you always try to not cross the line of parent and friend. It’s a fine line I constantly struggle with as I find myself with a teenager who is quickly becoming a little man of his own. You do want to always be there for your kids and be that cool parent your kids want to spend time, but at the same time you need to be that role model who sets the example for them to follow. You have to be there to guide them and help them to recognize their gifts and strengths.

I always try to lead by example and show our kids that you can turn your passions and dreams into reality if you focus and put your mind to it. You can find many magical moments while discovering your passions and as a parent none is more magical than discovering the passion of your child.

Our magical moment came to us when we discovered our teen Micheal’s love of video games when he was younger. I know most parents wouldn’t consider this a magical moment or encourage their kids to play video games often. But we realized Mike wasn’t just playing the games, he was figuring out how the systems worked and what made the video games good games. He would take notes about what he liked about the games and was taking apart the consoles and rebuilding them himself!

Yes folks, he would put them back together on his own and this was before he could look up how to do this on Google or the internet! It was scary at first I will admit, since these gaming systemsĀ  did cost a lot of money, but he would always put them back together perfectly in working order. He would do this simply because he wanted to know how something he loved so much worked. We have many gaming systems in our home for this reason.

As you can see in the pictures, when he plays his games he’s very focused as he is essentially studying the games and judging what works and what doesn’t. We all just sit back and watch him in action. Needless to say we make frequent visits to the gaming stores.

These are just some pictures of how you’ll find him most days in our home when he’s not doing home work and I’m ok with that! I encourage it since Michael wants to design video games and consoles one day. I always ask him what he’s learned about the games he’s played and what he would do to make them better. And because of this encouragement he’s looking at colleges that have programs geared towards doing this.

I think being a video game designer is the perfect occupation for him because he should be working in a career he loves and doing something he’s loved to do since he was a small child.

When I saw The Odd Life of Timothy Green, it made me feel like I was doing the right thing as a parent with Michael as there where moments in the movie that showcased how supportive Timothy’s parents were in whatever he chose to do.

For example, Timothy goes with his parents to his Aunt’s home recital and the Aunt pulls Timothy up to the stage to play for the crowd of guests sitting as the audience. Timothy not really knowing how to play an instrument, picks up a cow bell and starts playing the only song that he knows. His parents encourage him to go on and even get up and start singing and playing with him. They don’t try to stop him as they see he’s enjoying himself! They don’t discourage him or call him foolish for trying to do something that made him happy.

It was a moment that hit home with me as it really showcased how supporting your child no matter what is always a good thing! There is nothing like seeing your child’s passion come to life as he’s doing something that makes him truly happy!Ā  There really is no other way to describe it besides it being a magical moment.

You only get so many magical moments with your kids as you watch them grow up and it’s our jobs to recognize those moments as parents. The Odd Life of Timothy Green is a great movie that showcases this perfectly in so many ways! It has inspired me to write this post and I assure you it will inspire you to take notice of those magical moments you don’t want to miss.
