Hey All!
Last month, I had the awesome opportunity to check out an advanced screening of Dreamworks & Netflix Animation Voltron: Legendary Defender and spend the day at the Dreamworks Animation Studios. It was such a amazing experience as the Dreamworks campus is amazing. It’s beyond gorgeous as you can see.
They even have a pond filled with huge gold fish that swim right up to your feet!
The day was filled with fun activities and behind the scenes interviews. We played games like shooting Voltron hoops.
This is a game in which you stood on one letter of the word VOLTRON and if you got a basket, you got to move to the next letter. You start on V and work your way across.
I enjoyed adorable Voltron themed cupcakes…
Take fun photos…
And dub my voice into a scene from Voltron: Legendary Defender!
Which you can see the final product below:
I also got to chat with the filmmakers about how the show came to be and some of the cast. We started with the filmmakers Executive Producer Joaquim Dos Santos and Co-Executive Producer Lauren Montgomery. They shared their love for the original Voltron that they grew up watching when they were kids.
They also talked about the process of how long it took them to get this into production and how they waited to find the right cast of actors to voice the characters. They truly wanted to capture what fans love about Voltron and give it a modern day twist. We got to see the whole completed first episode and we were instantly hooked. The show will be on Netflix streaming on June 10th and will surely be on many Voltron’s fans binge watching lists.
This show didn’t apparently happen over night. They shared how they have been working on this show for years and it wasn’t until they found the support of Dreamworks and Netflix that it all came together to finally be produced. I’m so happy it all worked out and we now have this amazing new Voltron for a new generation.
The full cast includes Kimberly Brooks as Princess Allura, Rhys Darby as Coran, Josh Keaton as Shiro, Tyler Labine as Hunk, Jeremy Shada as Lance, Bex Taylor-Klaus as Pidge, Steven Yeun as Keith, Neil Kaplan as Emperor Zarkon, and Cree Summer as Haggar.
We got to sit down with four of the cast members Tyler Labine, Josh Keaton, Rhys Darby, and Kimberly Brooks. I was a little bummed Steven Yeun was not in attendance as I’m a huge Walking Dead fan! Josh shared that he had to tone his voice down a bit so he wouldn’t sound too much like Steven Yeun. They apparently sound alike when they are recorded in their normal speaking voices. Tyler Labine apparently sounded too kid like when he first auditioned, so they asked him to sound more mature for his character.
Another fun fact I learned in this interview is that they all got to record together which helped them get into character. They would record together as much as they could and they got to know each other’s character voices very well. They would even stand in for other actors and dub their lines if one was not able to make it to a group recording. I really got to see first hand how much this cast has bonding during their recording sessions to bring these animated characters to life.
Oh and if you’ve never heard of Voltron before, here is a little synopsis of what you can look forward to if you check it out:
