Our Orgullosa Nueva Latina Monologues Experience! #NuevaLatina

Orgullosa

Hey All!

If you follow me on Twitter or on Instagram you would have seen that I was in my fabulous home town NYC last week. I was thrilled to announce Iā€™m on the Orgullosa #NuevaLatina Blogger Board! As part of the program I was flown out to NYC to attendĀ Orgullosaā€™s Nueva Latina Monologues launch event. The event was held at the Helen Mills venue and it celebrated what it means to be a Latina living in the United States. Being that I’m full Latina (Puerto Rican and Cuban), it was great to be given the opportunity to celebrate and represent Orgullosa and the #NuevaLatina.

Being a Nueva Latina means you found the right balance of keeping your Hispanic heritage alive while being proud to be a modern woman in American as well. Personifying the bicultural Latina experience through emotion, comedy and authenticity, the Nueva Latina Monologues (NLM) ā€œvoicesā€ some of the real-life stories, topics/themes and cultural cross-roads that surround the bicultural Latina. By partnering with popular Latina director and writer, Linda Nieves-Powell, Orgullosa highlights the unique and complex journey of the bicultural Latina.

As well as a beauty bar filled with amazing products from OLAY, Pantene, Clairol, Nice N’ East, and Venus. There was also a cocktail hour filled with my favorite Sangria and Orgullosa cupcakes. It’s not a party until you have some fabulous cupcakes right?

I hung out and played dress up at the photo booth station with my two fellow members of the Orgullosa Blogger Board Ana of Traveling Latina and Rory of MamaContemporanea.

And I saw this amazing show of the Nueva Latina Monologues that made me proud to be in the same room as so many amazing Latina women. It truly was inspiring to see that we all struggle with the same things as we struggle to find our identity as a Latina woman.

It was a great night for Latina Women! Thank you Orgullosa for having me at #NuevaLatina Monologues.

If you’re not familiar with Orgullosa:

P&G created the Orgullosa platform in 2011 as an initiative that celebrates Latinas who donā€™t settle for walking the same path, but instead make a new one every day.Ā  The initiative, which carries the name of the Spanish word for ā€œproudā€, has as its centerpiece Orgullosa.com and www.facebook.com/orgullosa , as a virtual community where Latinas can engage in a dialogue with one another and build a community of resources that supports them on their path to success.

Orgullosa is for women who are PROUD:Ā  proud of her culture/traditions, of being Latina, proud of her beauty, family, and home. She juggles multiple roles and has a sense of self-actualization and enjoyment. She is not about breaking with the past or abandoning traditions, and recognizes the choices and opportunities that living in the US presents her.Ā Ā  She believes that she can exceed the expectations of her motherā€™s generation.Ā  Her sense of self actualization and empowerment has inspired the message for the initiative, ā€œMujeres con la Falda Bien Puestaā„¢ā€.

Orgullosa women are called mujeres con la falda bien puestaā„¢, which literally translates to ā€œwomen who have their skirts well placedā€.Ā  She does not want to wear the pants in the family, but wants to celebrate the femininity of Latinas, while acknowledging their steadfast spirit on the path to achieving personal and family success.
