Hey All!

I had the amazing opportunity to see an advanced screening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is of course the sequel to the first Captain America film The First Avenger. Returning as Steve Rogers/Captain America is Chris Evans, Black Widow is Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders is Maria Hill, and Sam Jackson is Nick Fury. Joining the cast is Frank Grillo (Warrior) as Agent Brock Rumlow, Emily Von Kamp (Revenge) as Agent 13, Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain) as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and cinema icon Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce. Taking over as directors and writers are Anthony and Joe Russo (You, Me and Dupree). There are other returning cast members, but in the interest of spoiler avoidance I will exclude them. Special shout out to composer Henry Jackman for making such an intense and complimenting score.

This is now the third installment in the Phase 2 Marvel Cinematic Universe and I can say without a doubt that it is the most action packed of any Marvel film to date. I dare say that is even the most action packed superhero film ever. The Russos really pushed the envelope with this film. There is a scene where our heroes are taking gun fire from a barrage of bullets that rivals the heist scene from Heat. And the physical fight scenes are amazing with real life people (not CG) fighting at speeds that put you at the edge of your seat. We have never seen Cap like this before. Captain America takes on a boat of terrorists, a jet, an elevator full of trained agents, and the bionic armed Winter Soldier all by himself. In an interview, Chris Evans said he wanted to show what makes Captain America such a vital member of a team that has Thor, Hulk and Iron Man. Mission accomplished. And it’s not just Cap getting all the action. Nick Fury has one of the best car chase sequences I have seen in a long time; and that includes the Fast and Furious films.

I felt it was important to state how amazing the action is in this film, but The Winter Soldier is not just an action film. Marvel Studios, under the leadership of Kevin Feige, has this amazing ability to not just make superhero films, but make them to fit in other genres as well. Where the Thor films are fantasy/adventure and The First Avenger was a WWII Period Film, Winter Soldier is more of a conspiracy thriller in the vein of Three Days of the Condor (a film starring Robert Redford). The film uses this to actually tackle very relevant themes of SHIELD wanting to take out possible threats before the threat occurs and corruption from those in power. Easy to relate, especially in today’s world where government surveillance are huge issues.

Every moment in this film is critical and holds some kind of surprise so it is difficult to explain the plot without giving anything away. The simplest way to put it is that a by the name Winter Soldier is apart of a conspiracy to eliminate a list of certain key members of SHIELD and anyone that may pose a threat to them with Captain America and Nick Fury being at the top of that list. It is no exaggeration to say that by the end of the film, everything will change for all of the Marvel characters, including the Agents of SHIELD. It’s truly one of the best action films to come to theaters in some time. It’s also one of the best Marvel films to date!

Though the action is never gratuitous, but again it will have you at the edge of your seat! Captain America is kicking butt and taking names in this film!

It may not be a good for children that are very young. Preteens, teens and adults should be the primary audience for this one. We loved it and there is no chance you won’t love it for the action alone.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is in theaters everywhere NOW! Run out AND See it if you haven’t already seen it at a midnight screening!
