Our Thoughts On Disney’s Big Hero 6!

Big-Hero-6-Disney Animation

Hey All!

Walt Disney Animation presents the animated superhero adventure Big Hero 6. While Big Hero 6 was also the title a superhero team and a comic book limited series produced by Marvel, the film borrows only the names; the story and most of the characterizations stand on their own as a more family friendly story.

Though Big Hero 6 has an ensemble cast of characters, the real stars are Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter from the show Supah Ninjas) and Baymax (voiced by Scott Adsit best known from the show 30 Rock). The story is set in the fictional town of San Fransokyo (which has the layout of San Francisco with the architecture of Tokyo) in what I assume is to be the not-too-distant future. I make this assumption on the observations that advanced miniature robot battles, though illegal, are nothing surprising to the citizens of this town. Young Hiro is a child genius who isnā€™t applying himself in any other capacity than hustling in the aforementioned robot battles. His older brother, Tadashi Hamata, is instead a genius that applies himself for the benefit of mankind. The character of Baymax is the robotic creation of Tadashi. Baymax is designed to function as an interactive medical aide robot. Though Baymax is a machine, he is the real heart of this film.

Being a robot, Baymax has one goal, to make people feel better, and his programming will not allow him to quit until his patient is better. This idea allows for a robot to have character development because he uses logic to determine what will cure his patient. An example of this is throughout the film Baymax asks if doing particular tasks will make Hiro feel better. Hiroā€™s affirmations lead Baymax to perform these tasks with an almost blind devotion.Ā  Itā€™s this relationship between Hiro and Baymax, which develops over the course of the story, that is not only the true drive and strength in the film, but also delivers some of its most touching and memorable moments.

Though the film has little in common with the Marvel Superhero team from which its name is derived, the film does show its inspiration is a direct influence from Marvel. The theme of a heroā€™s origin story spawned from tragedy is present, similar to Spider-man. The heroesā€™ super powers being not mystical or alien but rather their own intellect which is used to create is another popular Marvel trope, like Tony Starkā€™s Iron Man suit. And the biggest homage of all comes from a kind-of cameo from a popular iconic Marvel persona. Like the heroes of Big Hero 6, the beauty of Marvel heroes is that though their origins are different each hero is at heart a good person and chooses to become a hero. In these terms Big Hero 6 very much feels like Marvel story; one geared to kids that have grown up with Disney.

The rest of the Big Hero 6 team is voiced by an impressive cast of actors including Damon Wayans Jr. as Wasabi, Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon, Jamie Chung as Go Go Tamago, and T.J. Miller as Fred. And the amazing cast doesnā€™t end there. Alan Tudyk voices jerk business tycoon Alisatair Krei, Maya Rudolph voices Hiroā€™s Aunt Cass, and James Cromwell voices Professor Callaghan. Directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) by a story written by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh and Meet the Robinsons) and Jordan Roberts (Youre Not You), Big Hero 6 is the perfect superhero film that can be enjoyed by the entire family and is rated PG for animated fighting action sequences.
