Hey All!

I hope you were all following along as I ventured last week on a once in a lifetime journey with Disney where I got to see an advanced screening of “Into the Woods” at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts private movie theater. Yes I saw it at the Oscar theater and it was fabulous! The screening was followed by an amazing Q&A with almost the entire main cast and the Director Rob Marshall and the films producers. It was a precursor to me actually getting to meet some of the cast including Meryl Streep shortly after. More about that later!

It was spectacular to get to see the film in this way. It truly made it all the more magical as this is a film adaptation I’ve been waiting for decades for. “Into the Woods” is quite possibly my most favorite musical of all time. I saw the revival Broadway production which starred Vanessa Williams 3 times as I loved it so much. I have my PlayBills to prove it.

In case you didn’t know, “Into the Woods” is a modern twist on several beloved fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy), all tied together by an original story involving a Baker and his Wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the Witch (Meryl Streep), who has put a curse on them. The big-screen adaptation welcomes songs from the stage musical, including “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky,” “On the Steps of the Palace,” “No One Is Alone” and “Agony,” among others.

Rob Marshall, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directs the film and legendary eight-time Tony, Grammy® and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and Tony® winner James Lapine came on board to write the screenplay. Since Sondheim was involved I knew this had to be good.

The film also stars the one and only Meryl Streep (who can do no wrong), Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and the amazing Johnny Depp.

I’m happy to say that even with the small changes that were made to adapt the Broadway musical into a film, they really got this musical right. I LOVED IT! You always have that fear of the musicals you love being done wrong on the big screen and I’m happy to say this film did not become one of those tragedies. It was highly entertaining, funny, and something the whole family will enjoy seeing when it comes out Christmas Day! It truly was like reliving the stage production on the big screen. Meryl Streep is truly perfection in this film as the Witch. She belts out notes in the song “Stay With Me” that left me with my jaw dropped. I had no idea Meryl Streep had such a power house voice. Her previous musical performances do not even compare the the magnificent work she did in this film.

Johnny Depp, for the short time he is in the film is perfection as the Wolf. He gives the perfect amount of creepy and cleverness to the wolf. Lilla Crawford as Red Riding Hood was also fantastic! She literally sounded exactly like the stage version I saw so many years ago.

Emily Blunt and James Corden are perfect in their roles as the Baker and his Wife. Again shocked by the amazing voices they both had in the film.

Christine Baranski was also perfect as the evil step mother to Cinderella, but then again what is Christine Baranski not perfect in? She comes from the theater and always gives an amazing performance in anything she does on the big screen.

The biggest shocker as I watched was Chris Pine! I can’t even describe how perfect he was in his role as Cinderella’s Prince Charming. I had no idea he could sing and he sounds amazing in this film. When you see it for yourselves you’ll probably be taken aback just as much as I was. I’m in love with Chris Pine now after seeing this film!
