Hey All!

Walt Disney Pictures presents their first feature film directed by Steven Spielberg: The BFG. The BFG stands for The Big Friendly Giant and is based on the classic story by beloved novelist Roald Dahl.

The BFG follows the story of a charming yet unlikely friendship between a young orphan girl named Sophie and a gentle giant who kidnaps her from an orphanage in the middle of the night. The giant whisks Sophie away through the streets of London, over the English countryside and into Giant Country. At first Sophie is terrified of being eaten, but quickly learns that her captor has no interest in harming anyone. Sophie sees that the giant occupies most of his time collecting dreams that he then brings to the human world and places them in children. Sophie also sees that he lives with other giants that regard him as a runt and constantly pick on him. The giant tells her their names, which are all gross and cruel and befitting to their personalities. Sophie then gives him the name Big Friendly Giant, BFG for short. The rest of the film follows the touching and humorous friendship.

Sophie is played by newcomer Ruby Barnhill. The BFG himself is brought to life by Academy Award Winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies). Penelope Wilton (Downtown Abbey) plays The Queen of England. Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3) is The Queen’s Assistant Mary. While all of the giants are voiced by a horde of talented actors, the alpha giant, Fleshlumpeater, particularly stands out, likely because he is by voiced by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords).

Films like this are Steven Spielberg’s wheelhouse. Looking back at Hook, E.T. and even Empire of the Sun, Spielberg makes childlike wonderment into masterpieces. The pairing of Roald Dahl’s story and Spielberg’s directing gives the expected wonderful result. In the quiet moments you can see Spielberg’s directing in truly magical shots that inspire awe. In the moments between Sophie and the BFG there is a charm reminiscent of films geared towards children in the 80’s and 90’s. And it’s no wonder with screenwriter Melissa Mathison (The Indian in the Cupboard, E.T., The Black Stallion) adapting the story.

The BFG is an ideal film for families and children no matter the age. The dialogue is comprehensible on all levels, the humor is accessible at all levels, and there is no foul language or violence. A perfect film to introduce this generation of children to two master story tellers.
