Hey All!

We recently had the great opportunity to see Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (which comes out today)! It is the sequel to 2014’s The Maze Runner, which I really enjoyed. Like its predecessor, The Scorch Trials is based on the popular book series authored by James Dashner. Returning from the first film is director Wes Ball, writer T.S. Nowlin, and even composer Joe Paesano. The returning cast is Dylan O’Brien (Thomas), Ki Hong Lee (Minho), Kaya Scodelario (Teresa), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt), Dexter Darden (Frypan), Alexander Flores (Winston), and Patricia Clarkson as Doctor Ava Paige. I have a Mrs. Robinson like crush on Dylan O’Brien I will confess. He’s 24 people! It’s OK! I digress…

From the start, The Scorch Trials plays more like a continuation of the story from the first film rather than a sequel. The returning cast and crew create a feel that when completed, the Maze Runner films will easily flow together as one big movie. The Scorch Trials provides no real recap of the previous film except in a few bits of exposition dialogue. To fully grasp the story it is critical to that you have seen the first film before beginning The Scorch Trials. In fact, the best thing would be to get the DVD or Blu-ray of the first film and watch the films back to back. That being said, The Scorch Trials begins fast and intense out the gate. The kids from the first film have been rescued and brought to a facility run by a mysterious Mr. Janson (Aiden Gillen from Game of Thrones). At this facility they meet survivors from other mazes and are promised safety, but nothing is as it seems. The title of the film refers to the desolate landscape that the world has become: scorched; a desert wrought with sand storms and warped humans infected by disease. Thomas and his crew of Maze Runners search for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD and are forced to stick together as they can only trust each other.

The Maze Runner films are a part of the new Hollywood Trend of making young adults the heroes in a post-apocalyptic world. Of all of the series that do this, The Maze Runner films are without a doubt the best of all the films out there and it’s the most action packed. The action in The Scorch Trials is relentlessly intense and engaging. The heroes do not have super powers, are not trained fighters, have no special weapons or technology; they’re just quick on their feet. They are not extremely courageous, nor are they bound by duty. These are all young people that are just running from danger and are fighting to survive. The maze runners’ humanity and mortality is the greatest draw for the films because we can easily relate to them. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is a great popcorn film with exciting and memorable action sequences and a great story!

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is not for small kids. It’s rated PG-13 and that is an appropriate rating considering some of the language and intense situations. The film never becomes gratuitous in its violence and action sequences either.  Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is the perfect film to end the summer blockbuster season! I can’t wait to see the next one!
