Hey All!
Pitch Perfect 2 is obviously the sequel to the 2012 surprise hit Pitch Perfect. Returning cast from the first film are Bellas Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean, Hanna Mae Lee. Also returning are the fellas Skylar Astin, Adam Devine, Ben Platt and the Aca-Hosts played by Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins.
After a publicly humiliating performance on live television, the once champion Bellas are forced out of all U.S. competitions and have become the shame of America. For some of them this is their last year of college but not everyone is ready to accept this and move on. While the Bellas form a plan to compete internationally at the World’s Aca-Competition, Becca (Anna Kendrick) secretly begins an internship with a record label in pursuit of her own dream. Joining the Bellas as new blood is Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Ender’s Game) as Emily the daughter of a former Bella. Along the way the Bellas must contend with rival Aca-Groups like the German Acapella Army Das Sound Machine as well as with their own internal conflicts that come with getting older. While the first film was about the group coming together and trying something new, Pitch Perfect 2 is about the group realizing what truly unites them and makes them Aca-Spectacular.
Taking over as director, in her feature film directing debut, is one of the series’ stars Elizabeth Banks. Having been a producer on the previous film, Banks is able to bring the same fun and quirky humor that made Pitch Perfect a hit but also change the focus of the film to be on its female characters. While the first film shared screen time between the male and female characters, Pitch Perfect 2 is definitely all about the ladies. This is most evident by the boys taking on the supporting roles of “supporting boyfriend,” “flirty guy,” and “guy in love wanting to settle down.” This is not meant to degrade the male characters, but it is refreshing to see a film where multiple females are multi-dimensional characters that are not obsessed with boys or romance. If nothing else, Pitch Perfect 2 is a great film for young girls to see relatable female characters that deal with real issues of becoming adults.
In summation, fans of the first film with easily fall for Pitch Perfect 2. The humor is the same and all of the characters are continued with the same passion that made them interesting and fun initially. And of course each of the song performances remain in line with the style required of an acapella group with a really impressive display of coordination and creativity at the finale. Not just for girls, Pitch Perfect 2 is fun film that shows how the power of friendship and being unique to one’s self is the key to surviving anything.
If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for PITCHES?! This fantastic film is in theaters now! Run out and see it!
