Patriotic National Donut Day Donuts!

Hey All!

National Donut Day is tomorrow and I thought I would take today to share a fun donut recipe I quickly threw together that keeps to the patriotic theme we’ve had with our treats this week. Don’t mind the photos as they are not the best since this was thrown together last minute. I still thought, what the heck, I’m sharing it anyway! They would be perfect to make and munch on tomorrow for National Donut Day. Who says you have to go out and stand in a long line for a donut tomorrow. Make your own and celebrate at home! These would also be good to make for July 4th or any other fun backyard bash you have planned.

Here is how to make them!

  • 2 2/3 Cups of Flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp of salt
  • 3/4 Cup of sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of whole milk
  • 1/4 Cup of melted unsalted sweet cream butter
  • 1/2 Cup of sour cream
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 Cup of canola oil
  • Light blue, white, and red cookie icing

Vanilla Glaze ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup of milk
  • 2 Cups of powder sugar
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract

You first make the donuts! Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a baking spray to prep your doughnut pan and set the pan to the side. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and sugar in a large bowl and then whisk together the whole milk, sour cream , and eggs into a separate bowl. You then whisk in the melted butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla and gradually whisk in the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined.

Spoon the batter into the doughnut pan and bake at 400 degrees for 9 minutes. Allow doughnuts to cool a few minutes in the pan and then transfer the donuts to a wire rack to completely cool.

You then make the glaze for the donuts.  Combine all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix until smooth. Pour glaze over doughnuts and let dry for an hour before decorating with your red, white, and blue icing.

Once the glaze on the donut is dry, using the blue cookie icing, pipe a line on the top left corner of the doughnut and fill it in. You then pipe 5-7 lines using the red icing onto the donuts. Using the white icing, pipe on 10-12 dots on the blue part for the stars in the flag.

Let them dry for another hour and then get ready to enjoy your donuts!

That’s it! You’re done!

You’ve made yourself some yummy and fun Patriotic National Donut Day Donuts!

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Have a happy National Donut Day folks!
