I recently had the amazing opportunity to check out a screener for the amazing new Disney Plus movie SAFETY! It’s such an inspiring and touching movie drama that is inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey (Jay Reeves). It’s a must see on Disney Plus. It’s a sports movie and family movie in one!
Ray is a young man with a college scholarship who faced a series of challenging circumstances. He had a mom in rehab for substance abuse and a little brother who he had to look after. He couldn’t keep him on campus as that is again college and NCAA rules. He chose to hide his brother in his dorm in order to take care of him and go to school. Sadly they are discovered and he has to choose between his brother and his scholarship.
If he didn’t choose his brother, the boy would have ended up in the foster care system. It was beyond heartbreaking to see a young man forced to make these decisions when he should just be enjoying the college experience and focus on his sports. He is thrusted into parenthood and struggling to keep it all together in school.
Ray was never one to ask for help, but his team becomes like his family and they all take on the challenge of helping him with his brother. He was the first college athlete to gain permission from the NCAA to become his brothers legal guardian and get support to take care of him.Ā Aided by his teammates and the Clemson community, he succeeds on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr (Thaddeus J. Mixson).
His dedication and persistence helped him to figure out a way to keep his brother out of the system and with him.
I won’t share the whole movie. You have to check it out for yourself. It’s such an important movie to see how much struggle some have to go through just to get an education and help their family.
Check out this film and be sure to have a tissue box next to you because you will shed some tears.
