Hey All!

The Lone Ranger is brought to us by many of the people that brought us the Pirates of the Caribbean movies; same director, same writers, same producers, same music composer and even a few of the same actors, especially Johnny Depp. That being said, the tone is very much the same as in that this movie is too an explosive adventure. The film stars the always entertaining and talented Johnny Depp as Tonto the Native American partner of the Lone Ranger. In the title role of John Reid the Lone Ranger is Armie Hammer (Mirror, Mirror, The Social Network). The villainous role of Butch Cavendish is portrayed by William Fichtner (Prison Break). Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins, The Green Hornet) plays an influential and wealthy proponent of the railroad. Barry Pepper (The Green Mile) is a Captain in the U.S. Army. Helena Bonham Carter (Dark Shadows) is the madam of a brothel. James Badge Daley (Iron Man 3) is older brother and Texas Ranger Dan Reid.

This film is an origin story for both The Lone Ranger and Tonto. As such, it does take a lot of time creating the world of The Lone Ranger. The film is told as a story with flashbacks to a little boy (similar to The Princess Bride) by an aged Tonto in a wax exhibition. When we first meet John Reid, he is a lawyer from the city going to live with his brother and family and through an unexpected turn of events meets his destiny in the form of Tonto and Butch Cavendish who are chained together heading to a hanging. And much like previous incarnations of the story, John Reid does take up with the Texas Rangers and through tragedy becomes The Lone Ranger. Tonto helps bring John Reid back to health and with a common goal they join forces to bring down not only Butch Cavendish and his gang, but also stand against the corrupt bureaucrats of the town.

The Lone Ranger has been a part of American Culture since 1933 starting with Radio, then books, television and even film. This latest big budget film does not change the concept or dynamic, but does change the character’s origin a little bit and the costumes. And because of the big budget there are certain effects, set pieces, stunts and explosions that are bigger than anything ever done before in the Lone Ranger’s history. The Lone Ranger’s history goes back further than Batman, which makes him one of America’s first superheroes.

Anyone that was a fan of previous versions of this great American hero, should go into this film knowing that this version is not the version they grew up with but could be the version their children grow up with. And that kind of connection should be embraced, especially for this Fourth of July and for America’s first superhero.

Like the rating indicates, this film is not intended for anyone under the age of 13.
