We Chatted With Nicole Kidman About Her Role In Paddington!

Hey All!

I recently had the amazing opportunity to chat with the legendary Nicole Kidman about her role in The Weinstein Company new film Paddington. It was such a pleasure to chat with her as I have been a fan of her work for some time. Moulin Rouge and The Hours are two of my most favorite films of all time.

The story ofĀ Paddington has been around for decades as it comes from the beloved novels by Michael Bond. Producer David Heyman (HARRY POTTER) helps bringĀ Paddington to the big screen today January 16th. It tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) from the forest of Darkest Peru who travels to the city of London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

It’s such a sweet tale that I could definitely see why this movie attracted Nicole Kidman to want to be a part of it. She does play the villain in this film but she is a very comedic villain to say the least. She attributes her great performance in this role to her Director of the film Paul King.

Nicole:

“I was lucky because the director is such a great comedy director.Ā  So, when I showed up, he already had the whole thing kind of in his head.Ā  He said, “I want her to look like this and I want her to be kind of fun.”Ā  He wanted it to be fun, which I think comes across, you know?Ā  He didn’t want it to be too serious.Ā Ā  And so, that’s why a lot of it is tongue in cheek and the kids can kind of be a little bit scared, but they can also laugh a lot, which I think is the perfect combination.Ā  And for my kids, that’s the kind of stuff that they like, ’cause they don’t want to be actually scared. “

The film is great for children and parents a like and Nicole really felt that this kind of film was very rare. She jumped at the chance to tackle this role.

Nicole:

“I think that’s what makes it so appealing is that it works for grandparents, parents, and kids.Ā  And there’s not many films these days that you can say that about.”

I couldn’t not profess my love of The Hours and Moulin Rouge to Nicole (which I did) and I loved her in this film. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was seeking to do more family friendly roles now that she has small children in the home again. The answer I got from Nicole was truly exciting as she let me in on her next project as well.

Nicole:

“Things that I do are adult based.Ā  And, I have such a diverse array of interests that it’s really lovely to be able to have Sunny and Faith (her daughters) be a part of the work like that.Ā  I just optioned a book with Reese Witherspoon called “Big Little Lies,” which is not a children’s film, but we’re going to be doing it as a limited series.Ā  It’s strange because it’s actually about moms, so I’ll probably be talking to you all again, about moms with kids.Ā  And it’s an amazing book but it’s a thriller.Ā  But, it’s actually about all the dynamics of kindergarten and what goes on between the mothers and the parents and the children when they’re in kindergarten.Ā  And so, that’s my next big project and that’s with Reese.”

Who knew Nicole was friends with Reese? I didn’t!

Nicole was lovely to chat with and she’s fantastic in Paddington!

I highly recommend you run out and see it in theaters today!
