Hey All!

On Sunday, June 14th, Dixie will launch a movement called #DarkForDinner and I’m happy to be joining them on this important adventure. The movement encourages families to be more present in the moments that matter most and spend more meaningful time together, especially during dinner. In order to really appreciate the company of your family during dinner, the #DarkForDinner movement asks those participating to turn off all cell phones, televisions, computers or other electronic devices to ensure the time together is distraction free. I think this is such a great idea and I couldn’t agree more with Dixie!

I’ve always had a rule where we need to unplug from all technology when we’re having dinner together. There is nothing more distracting than seeing a family member with their face dug into their phone or tablet when you’re trying to connect with them and talk to them. Dinner time for me is about taking the time to relax and reconnect with each other after a crazy week of work and school. It’s a time to check in with each other and catch up. We should have the self control to be able to separate from our technology for at least an hour. Yes it can be hard to detach from our phones especially when we have amazing flamingo phone cases that are adorable.

Dinner time shouldn’t involve social media or any other apps or games we’re addicted to. We don’t need to snap pictures of our food! I will admit that I’ve had to make an effort to break these bad habits myself as I grew up with the TV on for dinner time. I usually had the tv on when we would have dinner time. I am guilty of that, but I recently stopped doing that. I did realize that it was a waste of electricity since we were not watching it and it was simply acting more like white noise than something we were actually watching during dinner time.

With this pledge to go #DarkForDinner this Sunday everything is being turned off! I’m looking forward to cooking a fun meal and serving it on these adorable colorful plates. I’m not sure what I’ll be making yet, but you’ll have to stay tuned to see what I make and to see how our pledge experience went.

For one dinner we will make sure all our technology is turned off so no work calls, personal calls, social media or other distractions will be able to take away from time we can spend together.

I encourage you to join me this upcoming Sunday on June 14th and go #DarkForDinner! Take the time to enjoy great conversation and time with what really matters most in life, your family.
