CARS ON THE ROAD POSTER

Hey All!

Pixar’s Cars on the Road is a series of shorts that follow the road trip adventure of Lightning McQueen and Mator. As someone who has a toddler who is obsessed with Cars, Cars On the Road Is Awesome! Each episode is approximately ten minutes in length and is a continuous story of Lightning and Mator’s trip to the wedding of Mator’s sister. Each episode is voiced by the original Cars stars Owen Wilson (Lightning McQueen) and Larry the Cable Guy (Mator).

Though the shorts have the uniting theme of a road trip with a final destination, and characters other than Lightning and Mator do reoccur throughout the series of shorts, each episode is fully contained and can be viewed on a one-by-one basis. The ability to view all ten episodes individually or binge them all the way through provides the exact same story but rather than give us Cars 4, I think this broken-down episodic format is actually ideal for fun new storytelling.

Episodes can have one off genres like a musical episode, or an homage to Mad Max Fury Road, or even a “spooky haunted hotel” episode, and because of the episodic format, the story never feels disjointed or inconsistent. Additionally, the episodic format also is a fun way to showcase various types of road trip adventure staples without, not to sound repetitive, being inconsistent in its narrative.

All of the same gimmicks of Cars films are present in the series, as is the theme of friendship. Whereas the Cars films had a focus on one popular character (Cars and Cars 3 were Lightning McQueen stories while Cars 2 was a Mator story) Cars on the Road is about both Lightning and Mator in a very balanced way which seems like the story younger audiences have always wanted.

Cars on the Road is light, fun, and very entertaining for both fans of the series and just casual viewers looking for an animated buddy comedy adventure as handled through the very adept hands of Pixar. This series is very G rated and children of any age should have no trouble absorbing its content and being entertained for either ten minutes at a time or the full approximately hundred minutes.
