Hey All!
This is not your childhood’s Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. This is not the original Chip and Dale created in 1943. This new film Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is its own thing using the idea that the Disney Afternoon show from the late 80s was a show in which its characters were portrayed by actors who were toons. This concept is probably most popularly remembered from the 1989 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, who actually makes a cameo in this film. The film reminisces on that time and then moves forward thirty years to the present day where Chip and Dale are no longer on speaking terms.
Chip (played by comedian John Mulaney) is working in insurance trying to forget the past while Dale (SNL alum Andy Sandberg) is working the convention circuit trying not only to capitalize on the nostalgia of the glory days, but also bring them back. Receiving a call from an old friend (Monterey Jack played by Eric Bana) both Chip and Dale go to help and get caught up in a real life case which calls on them to be the detectives they played so long ago.
First and foremost it should be said this is an irreverent take on not only the source material but other intellectual property as well. Written by one of the Lonely Island crew, you can think of the kind of take on this material as being akin to an extended Robot Chicken sketch. As such, I would say this is not aimed at extremely young children. More so, I think this is actually aimed at the generation that watched the Disney Afternoon, became parents and enjoy quirky and fun takes on cartoons.
In addition to having fun with the source material, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers pokes fun at a lot of things to do with animation, but in a loving way. The effects are blended seamlessly with the live action except when it is meant as a joke. The care and attention put forth with this aspect is a true testament that Disney is not afraid to back irreverent ideas with considerable money. That level of experimentation with their intellectual property is fun and interesting.
Streaming Now exclusively on Disney Plus, Chip ‘n’ Dale is rated PG!
