Porgy And Bess! A NYC Broadway Must See! #Broadway

Hey All!

During my visit to NYC for BlogHer 12 I had the amazing opportunity to attend the August 3 performance of Porgy and Bess at the Richard Rodgers Theatre thanks to mamadrama.com in NYC! It was a fabulous show that played to a packed house! The 2012 Tony Award winning cast led by Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald did not disappoint. This was a masterful showcase of story and song that takes the audience back to a very different time and place and reminds us of the struggles of a world easily forgotten.

The harsh reality of survival on Catfish Row is in contrast to the sense of community shared by all who live there. As a woman, Bess’ story is a reminder of a time when women had few options and choosing the wrong man could have life or death consequences.

Bess struggles to find herself in a world in which she of course selects the wrong man and then meets Porgy and establishes a relationship with him.  But during their relationship her ex comes backs and wants her back.  She struggles with the life she currently has (better life) or does she want to go back to the life she had. You’ll have to see the show to learn about all the drama that unfolds!

The Gershwins’ PORGY AND BESS is the 2012 Tony Award® winner for Best Musical Revival! Tony-winning Best Actress AUDRA McDONALD (Ragtime) stars alongside Tony nominees NORM LEWIS (Sondheim on Sondheim) and DAVID ALAN GRIER (Race) in one of the theater’s most exhilarating love stories. This classic musical has returned to Broadway for the first time in 35 years and features some of George and Ira Gershwin’s most memorable songs, including “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.” Newsday calls it “a luscious piece of musical theater!” Limited engagement concludes September 23rd. Don’t miss it!
