The Marvels Changes The MCU!

Our thoughts on The Marvels!

THE MARVELS

Hey All!

In theaters this November 10th is the 33rd feature film entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe: The Marvels. To say that The Marvels is a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel is not inaccurate, but it is also not that exclusively. The Marvels carries on storylines which began in the aforementioned film Captain Marvel, the Disney Plus series WandaVision, and the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel and joins the heroes Captain Marvel, Captain Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel in an intergalactic adventure that is fast paced and full of action, humor, heart, and above all fun.

THE MARVELS

The cast of characters in The Marvels includes returning actors Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Room) as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers, Avengers Endgame) as Nick Fury, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau (Disney Plus Series WandaVision, Candyman), and Iman Vellani (Disney Plus Series Ms. Marvel) as Kamala Khan/Ms. While there are new supporting characters, the only real new featured character is the Kree Accuser Dar-Benn played by Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw, Nocturnal Animals) who is the primary antagonist of the film.

The Marvels also provides a few surprise cameos from pre-existing characters and actors and I will not spoil them here because the fun of them appearing would be ruined for audiences who want to go in without prior information. One notable supporting character is Prince Yan and is played by Park Seo-joon (She Was Pretty, Parasite) and will no doubt be remembered from this film with his association to a planet The Marvels visit in which its inhabitants’ language is song and dance, a legit musical planet!

THE MARVELS

Which brings me to the vibe of The Marvels. I think the fun which The Marvels has with itself can best be illustrated with two things in the film: the fact that they visit a musical planet, and the introduction scene of Kamala in the film. The Marvels remembers that cosmic Marvel stuff is supposed to be weird and wacky, so if you are on board for a few minutes of singing and dancing on a musical planet (which I believe was introduced in 2015s Captain Marvel issue 9 comic book), then you are going to have fun in this movie.

The introduction of Kamala in the film is an echo from both her Disney Plus Series in which her fan art and graffiti was “animated to life” to make the scenery and tone pop in a fun way, and from Peter Parker’s home movie from Spider-man Homecoming in which he recounts his adventure from Civil War. Within the few minutes of Kamala’s animated fantasy, we learn everything we need to know about her powers, her attitude, and her vibe and it is all fun. Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan is the heart of the team and of the film.

THE MARVELS

Another thing The Marvels does well is bring an audience up to date. Did you see the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel? No? Ok here is her story in a nutshell and if you dig her, then you can go check out her show. Did you watch WandaVision and do you know how Monica Rambeau got her powers? No? Don’t worry because she will explain it to Carol in less than a minute. Do you like her?

Go watch WandaVision. Did you watch 2019’s Captain Marvel? No? Carol wears a device from that movie which shows her memories from her adventures in that movie. Everything you need to know about this movie and its characters is given to you in this movie and its fast and not boring.

THE MARVELS

Best of all, The Marvels is in fact fast paced, exciting, and fun. Its runtime is not a hindrance but rather a benefit used to move the adventure along. The switching of places that is shown in the trailers allows for very fast cuts and actually speeds up the action for both the audience and the characters in the film. The Marvels knows you are here for fun and it wastes no time giving it to you.

THE MARVELS

I honestly cannot think of anything that is inappropriate for children in the film. It is very family friendly, does an excellent job of driving a female driven story that doesn’t feel forced, moves fast and has very memorable moments, allows to care for the plight of each character without dragging the pacing, and manages to fit in some fun surprises that legit begin changing everything for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

THE MARVELS

It’s a must see in theaters November 10TH!
